Relinquishing Your Pet

Relinquishing Your Pet

For many people, relinquishing a pet can be emotionally upsetting. Often a pet is relinquished because an owner simply has no choice, or is unaware of resources that can help keep them together with their pet.

The Chemung County SPCA recognizes and appreciates that this may be a very difficult time for you and your family. Please know that we are here to assist you and to care for your pet if you must relinquish it. After working with the shelter, you may find that there are other alternatives than giving up your pet.

What resources would you need in order to keep your pet? We can help with the following:

Before you relinquish your pet to us at the shelter, have you

Here are two sites that we recommend:

  1. Get Your Pet
  2. Rehome

If relinquishing your pet to the shelter is your only option, we need to advise you that

We will do our best to re-home your pet, however, we cannot offer an adoption or placement guarantee.

If the animal is not appropriate for our adoption program, we will not be able to place it for adoption.

For example, we cannot place:

  • Animals with bite histories or those who bite during their stay at the shelter
  • Animals with severe, unprovoked aggression towards people or other animals
  • Animals with severe separation anxiety or unmanageable behavior issues
  • Animals who present with medical issues we cannot afford to treat

Your pet will be compassionately cared for during their stay at the Chemung County SPCA during which time the animal will be evaluated medically and behaviorally to assess the animal’s adoptability and to identify any concerns that could restrict or preclude the animal from finding a new home.

The Chemung County SPCA takes the responsibility of your animal’s well-being very seriously and we have a team of compassionate and dedicated animal care specialists who will provide loving care during their stay.
