Pet Food Pantry
There are a number of circumstances in which an owner would need to relinquish their pet – one of them being the inability to afford proper nutrition for a pet (and perhaps themselves). In 2015, for the purpose of further reducing the need for pets to be surrendered to local shelters, we formed strategic partnerships with the Food Bank of the Southern Tier and Meals on Wheels of Chemung County to launch the region’s first dedicated pet food pantry to provide assistance to pet owners experiencing financial hardship and those who are home bound.
Housed at the Chemung County Humane Society and SPCA’s facility, the Pet Food Pantry operates 6 days a week, Monday through Saturday throughout the entire year during normal business hours of the shelter (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday 11:00 am-4:00 pm, excluding major holidays). The program primarily serves low-income households who are living at or below the current U.S. Government poverty guidelines. Applications for the program are available at the shelter. Applicants are asked to bring a valid form of I.D. and proof of residency.
We believe that Pet Food Pantry fills a need for the pets and pet owners in the community by helping keep families together.
