The Chemung County Humane Society and SPCA has reached its 2009 fundraising goal of $350,000. The shelter announced on Monday that it not only met its original goal, but was also able to finish the year off in the black due to generous food and supply donations coupled with cost-cutting efforts that allowed the shelter to meet its bottom line without compromising quality.
"We are overjoyed to have reached our fundraising goal," said Barbara McLean, executive director of the Chemung County Humane Society and SPCA. "We couldn't have reached this goal and continued to provide for the homeless, abandoned and abused animals of Chemung County without the generous support of our community. Everyone has been so fantastic to the animals this year and we just want to say a big thank you to all the people who helped."
This comes after the February 2009 press conference where the shelter announced that if it did not make up its budget deficit, it may have to shut its doors or cut services. The attainment of its fundraising goal allows the shelter to: maintain its animal intake of more than 2,000 animals each year, successfully place shelter animals in loving homes, educate nearly 3,000 students through their humane education program and respond to more than 900 animal complaint calls.
