The Horseheads Intermediate School Clydesdale Team presented a check for $500 to the Chemung County Humane Society and SPCA on Monday, Nov. 2 at a 1:30 p.m. assembly held at the school. The Clydesdale team is made up of three sixth grade classes.
"We are always so touched when groups think of us when they have a community giving project," said Public Relations and Marketing Coordinator for the Chemung SPCA, Jaclyn Pfaehler Welles who attended the assembly to accept the check. "The students were really engaged and asked great questions," she added. "It is wonderful that these young people care so much about the animals."
Welles gave a brief presentation to the students about what the SPCA is and what services they provide to the community. She also brought one of the shelter's residents, Rocco, a one-year-old German Shepherd mix.
The sixth graders held a garage sale and bake sale on Saturday, Oct. 24, in commemoration of Make-a-Difference Day. The students raised $500 at this event and voted on which organization to donate the money to. They decided on the Chemung County SPCA.
"I am very proud of our students for all of the hard work they put into this event," said Nicole Imbt, one of the sixth grade teachers at Horseheads Intermediate School who helped coordinate the event. "They have demonstrated a tremendous amount of generosity through donating their personal items for our sale. The students have shown even more compassion for others while volunteering their time on a Saturday. This event could not have been possible without the help of their families."
