Volunteer Coordinator - Part-Time Position 

Summary

The SPCA Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for managing the shelter's youth, adult and community service volunteer programs, effectively scheduling volunteers, improving the volunteer retention rate and increasing the number of volunteer hours annually. This position directly reports to the Operations Director.   

Responsibilities

    • Develop and implement effective strategies for sustained growth of the volunteer program
    • Expand the utilization of volunteers by increasing the number of volunteers and/or number of hours
    • Serve as the SPCA's representative in the community for volunteer recruitment initiatives; builds relationships with community organizations to tap potential volunteer bases
    • Manage and oversee activities related to the recruitment, interviewing, training, tracking, evaluation, recognition and retention of all volunteers  
    • Schedule volunteers in coordination with department managers' needs and maintain a volunteer database
    • Meet regularly with Operations Director to identify opportunities for volunteer assistance
    • Develop or maintain various documents and/or processes, including, but not limited to a volunteer handbook outlining responsibilities and policies, a volunteer application form, volunteer work descriptions and a process to evaluate volunteers
    • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
    • At least two years previous experience working with volunteers or as a volunteer required
    • Previous experience working with diverse age ranges and social backgrounds a plus  
    • Self-starter with mature judgment, energy and enthusiasm
    • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively with people across all departments of the SPCA
    • Proven program management skills
    • Excellent presentation skills; ability to represent the SPCA in a professional manner
    • Experience interacting with the public
    • Good computer skills
    • Able to work a flexible schedule, including some nights and weekends

Animal Behaviorist/Trainer - Full-Time, Benefits-Eligible Position 

Summary

The Chemung County Humane Society & SPCA is seeking an experienced animal behaviorist/trainer who will be responsible for: 

  • Developing curriculum for and leading positive reinforcement-based training classes for the public
  • Conducting temperament tests on shelter animals using industry-recognized methodology and developing and implementing behavior modification and enrichment programs for dogs & cats
  • Providing on-site counseling for potential adopters to promote successful matches
  • Training shelter staff and volunteers in the implementation of  behavior modification and enrichment measures
  • Providing behavioral consultations, both off-site and by phone, to reduce adoption returns and owner surrenders
  • Crafting animal descriptions for promotional purposes
  • Performing basic office work, including filing, organizing, data entry, generating reports, etc.
  • Maintaining positive communications and working collaboratively with all personnel in a professional and consistent manner
  • Assisting with animal care as needed
Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years of shelter and training experience
  • CPDT-KA or KPA CTP preferred 
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, as well as the ability to work overtime, weekends and holidays as needed
  • Must have a valid driver's license
